Split trip and group expenses, simply and exactly

Splitting means working out each person's share of what the group spent together. This calculator adds up the expenses, works out every share and tells you who pays whom, with the fewest transfers.

What does "dong" mean?

In Persian, "dong" (from "dang", one sixth of something) is each person's share of a shared cost. Paying your dong means paying your part of what the group spent.

Split expenses in three steps

  1. Members: add everyone on the trip.
  2. Expenses: the amount, who paid, and who shares it.
  3. Settle up: see each share and the list of transfers, then send it to the group.

How the split is calculated

Each share is the total spent divided by the number of people. Subtract a person's share from what they paid: a positive balance means they are owed money, a negative one means they owe. People who owe pay the people who are owed until everyone is at zero.

Example: a four-person road trip

Ali paid for the villa, Sara for fuel, Reza for dinner, and Mina paid nothing. The total is 6,000,000 toman, so each share is 1,500,000 toman.

Road-trip split (amounts in toman)
PersonPaidShareResult
Ali4,000,0001,500,000owed 2,500,000
Sara1,200,0001,500,000owes 300,000
Reza800,0001,500,000owes 700,000
Mina01,500,000owes 1,500,000

Three transfers settle it: Mina pays Ali 1,500,000, Reza 700,000 and Sara 300,000. The calculator at the top of this page does this for you.

Split any shared cost

  • Trips: accommodation, fuel, food and tickets.
  • Restaurants and cafés: use "Exact" when everyone ordered something different.
  • Parties and birthdays: food, cake and group gifts.
  • Housemates: rent, bills and groceries.
  • Hiking and camping: supplies, shared gear and car hire.

When shares aren't equal

If someone wasn't part of an expense, untick them. For couples, choose "By shares" and give them two shares. If everyone ordered separately, use "Exact".

Why this calculator

  • No sign-up, no install and no bank account needed.
  • Equal, by-shares or exact split for every expense.
  • The fewest transfers to settle the group.

Frequently asked questions about splitting expenses

What does "dong" mean?

In Persian, "dong" (from "dang", one sixth) is each person's share of a cost the group paid together. A dong calculator works out those shares and who pays whom.

How is a group split calculated?

Each person's share of a shared expense is compared with what they paid, which shows who is owed money and who owes it.

What is the formula for splitting expenses?

Each share is the total divided by the number of people. What someone paid minus their share shows whether they are owed or owe.

How do I split a trip?

Add the people on the trip, log each expense with who paid it, and tap "Calculate split". You'll see each share and the transfers needed to settle up.

How do I split a restaurant bill?

If everyone had about the same, use an equal split. If orders differed, choose "Exact" and enter each person's amount. Add the service charge as a separate equal expense.

What if someone only joined for part of the trip?

Untick them on the expenses they weren't part of, so their share only covers what they joined.

How do I split costs for couples or families?

On that expense choose "By shares" and give the couple or family two shares, so they count as two people.

Is the calculator free?

Yes. No sign-up and no install; it works in any phone or desktop browser.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari and everything works as on Android. To install TourOn on iPhone, use "Add to Home Screen" in Safari.

What does "fewest transfers" mean?

Debts are netted so that, instead of everyone paying several people, the group settles with the fewest card-to-card transfers.
